Calling all veterans! We’re here to talk to you about CBD and anxiety.
No, we’re not talking about getting you high, CBD doesn’t have psychoactive effects. But it has been known to reduce feelings of anxiety, PTSD, and a range of physical ailments.
Serving your country is a task like no other, and many of our veterans suffer when they return. If this is you, it’s time to think about CBD and whether it could help you live a life free from anxiety, flashbacks, and pain.
Read on for our guide to CBD use, designed for veterans.
Life for Veterans After Serving
First, let’s get it straight, you don’t have to have fought in 1 on 1 combat to be a veteran. Anyone who served in the military during times of war or peace, no matter what role or rank, is a veteran. Every veteran makes incredible personal sacrifices to keep us safe – they risk their safety, relationships, and quality of life to protect our country.
But, it’s no secret that many veterans struggle to integrate back into society after the experiences of serving their country.
So what’s going wrong?
Veterans often finish their time with a host of issues such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and physical ailments. The treatment for each of these is usually antidepressants and opioids. Opioids are effective drugs but are addictive and around 70% of homeless veterans also experience substance abuse. So an opioid prescription can be a slippery slope to addiction for veterans suffering from anxiety.
Overall, around 66,000 veterans actually receive treatment every year for addiction to opioids; drugs prescribed to help them deal with their experiences.
Something isn’t adding up, there must be more we can do to protect those that protected our country.
What’s the Link Between CBD and Anxiety?
CBD (cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring phytochemical that is extracted from the cannabis plant. It contains low levels of THC (the psychoactive part of cannabis) and so as long as THC levels stay below <0.3%, CBD is legal.
But how does it work? CBD interacts with certain receptors in the central and peripheral nervous system that alter serotonin signals. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is paramount to having good mental health.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse says that CBD has shown to decrease stress levels in animals, CBD had the effect of lowering heart rate and reducing behavioral signs of anxiety.
Benefits of CBD for Veterans
So we’ve established that opioids can perpetuate issues in veterans, and that CBD can be effective for reducing anxiety. But beyond reducing anxiety, there are more benefits; CBD is not addictive, not illegal, and has a low risk for side effects.
Many people, not just veterans, use CBD for anxiety relief. CBD is effective for both chronic and acute anxiety. It leads to an improved sense of well-being and reduces stresses in daily life.
10-20% of veterans have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). At a baseline, PTSD is associated with symptoms of fear, anxiety, insomnia, and avoidance of normal situations that remind them of trauma. However, PTSD can cause acute episodes (flashbacks) that can make daily life impossible – research has shown that CBD can reduce these symptoms.
Antidepressants and opioids are treatments for PTSD but this can lead to other issues and complications further down the line. CBD research is gaining momentum and there are government-funded studies taking place at this moment. But, even before the benefits of CBD were realized, many veterans used cannabis-based products for PTSD symptom relief.
The best thing about CBD as opposed to cannabis products? It’s non-addictive but still has the positive benefits of cannabis. Research is still ongoing but there is the promise for a recognized consensus that CBD can help veterans.
What Type of CBD Should I Buy?
If you haven’t already gathered, people are excited about CBD. Therefore, there are so many types of CBD available on the market, all boasting different properties. It’s impossible to know where to start.
Luckily, we’ve done the work for you.
Our products are designed with veterans in mind, providing a natural alternative/addition to medications. Of course, if you’re already on medications you should not discontinue them unless on the advice of a physician. We recommend a ‘start low and go slow’ approach to usage.
At On Duty USA, we make CBD coffees, edibles, oils, lotions, and rollers. Depending on your needs these can be drunk, eaten, taken under the tongue, or applied topically to painful areas. If you love our products, we also do CBD for your pets!
Make sure you buy full-spectrum (pure) CBD to stay within the law. If taken at the recommended dose, all our products will keep you below that vital THC level for a drug test (for perspective, you would need to ingest 1 liter of CBD oil per day for a positive drug test). However, if you are concerned about drug testing at all, we recommend On Duty Zero THC Hemp Oil.
